The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is widespread throughout the world and is the ancestor of all domestic ducks. Typical dabbling ducks, they feed on or near the water surface and also on land. The male has the distinctive dark green head, while the female has plainer brownish plumage, both sexes have violet-blue wing patches. Usually 8-10 eggs are laid in a nest on the ground.
