Blackthorn Coppice Knob Walking Stick
Product Code: 3518These traditional blackthorn knob walking sticks are perhaps the most rustic in appearance of all walking sticks. They almost seem to have been freshly cut from the hedgerow and still have the bumps where the blackthorns have been trimmed off and occasionally the base of the thorns themselves. Blackthorn coppice knob sticks are often used by beaters at shoots and form part of the ceremonial dress uniform of some British Army regiments. Read on to find out how they are cultivated in reality. This example is made from blackthorn.
This walking stick can be cut down in size as required. Please select the required walking stick length from the pull down menu below. Please note that we will come as close as we can to the measurement you select but as this height includes the ferrule and thicknesses of ferrule vary, your walking stick my vary by up to 1/2 inch from the height selected. Please note once a stick has been cut to size we are unable to accept it back, so please be sure you are choosing the correct length.
To measure someone for a walking stick, ask them to stand with their weight evenly on both feet, looking straight ahead and with their arms relaxed by their sides. You then need to measure from the floor to the prominent bone of the wrist. This is the length of walking stick required. Please note this is just a rule of thumb. If the person has special needs, they may need to be measured by a medical professional. Alternatively they may have personal preferences for a longer or shorter walking stick.
Coppicing is a traditional forestry technique and the method used to produce rustic walking sticks. A deciduous tree such as ash or chestnut is sawn in two, whereupon the part remaining rooted in the ground produces a number of new shoots. Within a few years, these grow large enough to form walking sticks. They are then cut from the tree and the process begins again.
The rounded handle of a knob stick is fashioned from part of the original tree's trunk; they do in fact grow upside down. Thumbsticks are grown in the same way except that the V-shaped handle is formed by a naturally occurring fork in the new shoot.
Coppicing is the ultimate technique for sustainable woodland!

There are several different types of walking stick ferrule, most of which are listed here. Each ferrule is available in a number of different diameters, simply choose your preferred width from the pull down menu below. This bell shaped ferrule is our most popular shape. It is made of black rubber and has a steel washer insert. For people who use their walking stick in ernest, rather than just as a fashion accessory, good tread is vital. To ensure that your walking stick does not slip on wet or smooth surfaces, it is important to replace the rubber ferrule frequently. For those who have a decorative cane with a horn or metal ferrule, serious consideration should be given to covering this with a rubber ferrule, if the cane is to be used for support.

Paul and Sara, What a brilliant service! My order was here at 9.25am today and now less than 24 hours since I ordered the new martingales are up on the wall in place of the two that broke. I'm so glad I found you on the internet earlier in the year. Many thanks, Anne.
Anne A., Fishguard

Hi Paul - just to let you know that I fitted these to my Antler Cabin Bag today.
The fit is just as good as factory originals and has made the case like new.
Alan L., Gloucestershire
Just a line to say the martingales arrived safely. I was very pleased that the quality is a lot better than the photos would have me believe. Not only is the leather very stout, the buckle and dee are solid brass throughout. It is unlikely I will ever need such an item again, as they are to stay indoors, replacing some disintegrated leather parts from my dad's workhorse tackle.
Nevertheless, I wish you all the best in your business.
