Several types of wormers are available to horse owners. The drugs used in proprietary
wormers can be divided into the following groups:
Benzimidazoles
Fenbendazole - e.g. Panacur paste, Panacur Equine Guard.
Mebendazole - e.g. Telmin paste.
Oxibendazole - e.g. Equitac paste.
Tetrahydropyramidines
Pyrantel - e.g. Strongid-P paste, Pyratape P Paste.
Avermectins and Milbemycins
Ivermectin - e.g. Eqvalan paste, Furexel paste.
Moxidectin - e.g. Equest paste.
When should we use wormers?
Everyone's situation and circumstances will vary. It is best to seek the advice
of your veterinary surgeon for a worming regime which suits your requirements. A general
regime which we commonly use when advising our clients is shown below:
Worming Key
Indicates the best time
to double dose with either Pyratape P or Strongid-P for tapeworms.
Indicates the best time
to worm for bots. Use either Eqvalan, Furexel or Equest.
This symbol indicates the
main risk periods for cyathostomes (the encysted larvae of the small red worms). Worm
in these periods with either Panacur Equine Guard or Equest.
Grazing
During the grazing season we advocate routine worming every 4-12 weeks, depending on the
product used. We advise that you change the type of wormer (between the different drug groups) each time
you worm in the grazing season.
There is a school of thought that the type of wormer (drug group) need only be changed
from year to year.
Whichever advice is followed, it is very important that this rotation is
carried out, to avoid resistance from developing!
