Blackthorn Coppice Knob Walking Stick

data-pin-do="buttonPin" data-pin-config="none">Blackthorn Coppice Knob Walking Stick 3518

Product Code: 3518

These traditional blackthorn knob walking sticks are perhaps the most rustic in appearance of all walking sticks. They almost seem to have been freshly cut from the hedgerow and still have the bumps where the blackthorns have been trimmed off and occasionally the base of the thorns themselves. Blackthorn coppice knob sticks are often used by beaters at shoots and form part of the ceremonial dress uniform of some British Army regiments. Read on to find out how they are cultivated in reality. This example is made from blackthorn.

This walking stick can be cut down in size as required. Please select the required walking stick length from the pull down menu below. Please note that we will come as close as we can to the measurement you select but as this height includes the ferrule and thicknesses of ferrule vary, your walking stick my vary by up to 1/2 inch from the height selected. Please note once a stick has been cut to size we are unable to accept it back, so please be sure you are choosing the correct length.

To measure someone for a walking stick, ask them to stand with their weight evenly on both feet, looking straight ahead and with their arms relaxed by their sides. You then need to measure from the floor to the prominent bone of the wrist. This is the length of walking stick required. Please note this is just a rule of thumb. If the person has special needs, they may need to be measured by a medical professional. Alternatively they may have personal preferences for a longer or shorter walking stick.

Coppicing is a traditional forestry technique and the method used to produce rustic walking sticks. A deciduous tree such as ash or chestnut is sawn in two, whereupon the part remaining rooted in the ground produces a number of new shoots. Within a few years, these grow large enough to form walking sticks. They are then cut from the tree and the process begins again.

The rounded handle of a knob stick is fashioned from part of the original tree's trunk; they do in fact grow upside down. Thumbsticks are grown in the same way except that the V-shaped handle is formed by a naturally occurring fork in the new shoot.

Coppicing is the ultimate technique for sustainable woodland!

I want to thank for your attention and let you know that I received the locks yesterday in time for another trip. It was indeed fantastic to find your site selling those locks. I bought that Delsey suitcase in a trip to London in June 1984!! The sales agent jumped on the bag to demonstrate how strong it was (at the time thos suitcases were still produced in France), I never forget that and indeed, it is strong - 27 years old and still in good shape, but the locks could not resist airport security in Houston. The new locks are now in place and tomorrow will fly again in another direction.

Thank you for taking care of my wish!
I have long wished to have a blackthorn stick.
Here on the isle of Walcheren grow blackthorns also, but they are mostly not old enough to cut a stick from.
I will be happy to walk with one from England. Best wishes.
