Loose ring bits give a more subtle form of communication between horse and rider than fixed cheek bits, like eggbutt or full cheek bits.

Gag bits work by raising the bit in the horses mouth by using the roof and upper bars, this in turn raises the horses head.
Such bits are used in conjunction with rope or leather gag cheeks. These cheeks are rolled, so that the bit can slide freely up and down. The bars are the areas of gum on the upper and lower jaws, between the front and back teeth, where the bit sits. These days it is considered inhumane to use the roof of the mouth, as it has little flesh to protect it and so it is not often used.

Gag bits should be used on two reins, so that the snaffle action can be used for the most part and the
correctional gag rein only when necessary to raise the horse's head.

This Balding Gag bit is available in two sizes, make your selection from the pull down menu.

Sizing Loose Ring Bits - there should be a 1/4" gap each side of the horse's face. Loose ring bit which are too narrow can nip the horse's lips because the cheek slides through the hole in the mouthpiece and the lips can be pulled into the gap. Please take care to get the sizing right, as we cannot take back used horse bits.

How to correctly adjust the height of your new bit. It is best to do most of the adjustment before putting the bridle on the horse so, put the bit onto the bridle then hold it up to the side of the horse's face. Then put the top of the headpiece level with the top of the horse's head (poll) and the mouthpiece of the bit level with the corner of the mouth. Next adjust
the bridle to fit. The cheekpieces should be adjusted, so that the bit lies in the correct position in the horse's mouth, i.e. leaving a little wrinkle at each corner of the mouth. Do not fit the bit to high, so that the horse appears to be grinning. Do not fit the bit too low, so that the bit hits the horse's teeth.

Established in the late eighteenth century (1700s) the Eldonian brand is one of the original and most respected names in riding hardware throughout the equestrian world. Eldonian is owned and marketed by Jeffries, under whose supervision only the finest stainless steel is used, to manufacture bits in a carefully-controlled engineering environment. This ensures that Eldonian stainless steel hardware meets the exacting standards of quality, strength, reliability and safety demanded by today's discerning riders.

Good Day Sara, Just to let you know I received my parcel in good order and time. I must say I was surprised it arrived in such quick time. Thanks once again.

John R., Bermuda
Thank you very much. I must commend you on the personal touch - makes a very pleasant change! I will definitely register going forward as we will certainly need more gear in the coming months. Yours sincerely.

Christopher K., Australia
Many thanks for speaking to me yesterday and processing my order so quickly. It arrived in the post today and I am glad to say the Replacement Leather Seat for a Gamebird shooting stick is a perfect fit for for my Featherwate shooting stick. Your advice was very helpful, many other businesses would have "inappropriately" advised on a bespoke replacement but not you guys. You said try this first, advised on your replacement policy if it did not fit and the approximate cost of a bespoke item if that was the required end solution. The item arrived and 10 minutes later was fitted and has returned my grandfather's shooting stick to a very serviceable state and will be used for many years to come.
You are a credit the army of small family businesses that we have in the UK; your communications were clear and the delivery very speedy - all-in-all and exemplary service and one your family should be proud of. I just spoke to my Mum and she and my Dad purchased suitcases from your business back in the 1950s to go on their honeymoon - small world!

Paul M., Cirencester
I ordered two walking sticks yesterday and I am delighted to say that they have arrived this morning. I am really pleased with the quality of the sticks and the service I have received. I will certainly use your company again. Many thanks.

Thanks for the handle - to my surprise, it is an exact match to the original. You might be interested to note that it is for a Selmer saxophone 'flight' case. I would think that saxophone repair specialists have a demand for these quite a lot! Thanks again.
