Leathergoods Repairs by Cox the Saddler
Cox the Saddler was established in 1911 and is based at 23, High, Street in Chesham, Buckinghamshire on a site where saddlers have lived and worked since 1649.
The maintenance of this tradition is important to the Jeffrey family, who have owned the business for the past 20 years. Repairs to leathergoods of all kinds are a mainstay of the business.
Our day to day repair work tends to involve; handbags, suitcases and briefcases but over the years we have repaired almost any item you can think of from; bellows and shooting sticks to trunks, musical instrument cases and swimming pool covers.
Handbags are probably the most common item we have in for repair. Obviously if a lady has spent a good deal of money on a; Mulberry, Carriage Tula or Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Burberry handbag, she is going to want to have its strap, flap or chape, magnetic clasp or buckle replaced, rather than throw the handbag away. We can re-stitch piping, replace chapes, stitch seams and repair torn lining, rivet straps, replace zips and zip runners and even make new shoulder straps. On occasion, we are able to refurbish leather handbags using black or brown leather stain and Connolly's wonderful Hide Food leather conditioning product which we sell on our web site. Connolly Hide Food is one of our fastest selling items, a brilliant leather conditioner made from beeswax and lanolin.
The second most popular type of leather item we get in to repair is the leather briefcase both soft and hard. Hard leather briefcases often suffer from broken hasps, as their owners do not brace the hasp, as they open the briefcase but allow it to ping up, which often results in a shattered briefcase hasp. We can replace briefcase hasps, whether they are highly polished brass or nickel or brushed finish brass or nickel or even gunmetal finish and antique brass. Often it is the briefcase lock which is broken. We are adept at replaceing both briefcase key locks and briefcase combination locks (2 or 3 digit combination locks are no problem at all). We also offer the service of breaking into briefcases when the owner has lost the key or forgotten the combination. Having retrieved the valuable contents of the briefcase, we are then in a position to repair or replace the lock.
The second most popular briefcase repair, is the broken briefcase handle. We must have over 50 different types of briefcase handle in our workshop and are able to replace briefcase handles with an exact replacement most of the time. We can even help if the briefcase shoulder strap is broken. Perhaps it is just the shoulder pad which is worn or the trigger hooks on the end of the shoulder strap which need replacing, either way it is rare that we cannot effect a repair.
Leather holdalls too benefit from this shoulder strap repair service. Where the short handles of a holdall are broken or missing we can either repair or replace them ourselves or if the customer urgently requires to use the holdall we stock a very useful item called the emergency repair handle which simply buckles onto the d-rings the old handle used. In this way our customers can be off on their travels again with the minimum delay.
Thanks to the use of automatic baggage handling equipment at the world's airports, including; Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stanstead we have a steady flow of suitccase repairs to carry out, particularly during the summer season. In our retail shop we stock only; Delsey, Samsonite and Antler suitcases but we will repair any make of luggage including; Carlton, Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Tumi, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Revelation, American Tourista, Kipling. Damage to suitcases, trunks, rucksacks etc. from baggage handling equipment at airports includes, broken telescopic handles, broken carrying handles, torn seams, missing buckles, torn off locks and worn wheels. We can address the majority of these problems using both the wide range of luggage spares we hold in stock and our contacts at Samsonite, Delsey and Antler.
With regard to suitcases, possibly the most frequently asked question we get is can you find a key to replace my missing suitcase key. Sadly we can only answer yes to this question where it applies to; Samsonite, Cheney and Delsey suitcase keys but we are constantly on the look out for other brands of suitcase key.
For many years our workshop was busy in August, repairing beautiful old school trunks ready for the return to school in September. In some cases these old leather trunks were family heirlooms to which our customers were sentimentally attached, perhaps they were steamer trunks first used on P&O cruises in the early 1900's. Thanks to our repair and refurbishment skills, many of these old leather trunks are still doing good service for their families years after our repairs were carried out. Such is the quality of our leather repairs that it is not uncommon for the repair or patch to outlast the rest of the repaired item. Some handbags, trunks, folios and briefcases return to our workshop time after time for repair.
In our shop Cox the Saddler Ltd. we are proud to sell Gamebird and Tirion shooting or seat sticks. These too are so well made, that they can become family heirlooms. Eventually though, after a lifetime's use, the seats often require repair or replacement and here again Cox the Saddler can help. We stock entire replacement seats for shooting sticks and where their is no spare seat available, we can make a new seat. The other problem from which seat sticks sometimes suffer is worn handles where they were once covered in leather. By skilled soaking of the leather and stitching we can re-cover shooting stick handles and make them good as new.
Our workshop does not only busy itself with the repair of large leather goods but will also turn its attention to the repair of; purses, wallets and belts. Well loved purses and wallets often need press studs to be replaced and as everyone knows belts need new holes to make them bigger or cutting down to make them shorter. Our minimum charge for putting new holes in belts is £5, so it is always worth considering our custom made belt service. We use cast brass buckles and high quality English bridle leather, to make belts in a variety of colours and widths to meet the specifications of our customers. These belts can be finished with creased edges or stitched edges as required. The belts are made by Richard Hearn our Master Saddler who has worked for us for decades.
Of the vintage leather items we repair, perhaps our favourites are the old gun cases, gun slips and gun slings we receive, as they are linked to the trade of our gun room, another interesting aspect of our business here at Cox the Saddler Ltd.
Our handmade belts are just one example of the leatherwork we can make from scratch. If you look at our web site www.saddler.co.uk you will also find custom made dog leads and collars. With these Richard builds on his experience as a dog handler in the British Army as well as his saddlery expertise. The dog collars are finished beautifully with embossed creasing and embossed leaves at the tip, a lovely touch. Richard our saddler also makes a beautiful job of luggage straps for vintage cars.
It goes without saying that a 100 year old company called Cox the Saddler Ltd. will also be able to repair and refurbish horse saddles and tack or bridlework. Richard our saddler will confidently undertake the re-flocking of saddles and will re-stitch; bridles, browbands, stirrup leathers, headcollars, girths, martingales, cheeks, nosebands, flashes and even cruppers. What does perhaps need reiterating is his gift for repairs to more obscure items such as; bellows, leaf blower bags and swimming pool covers.
//Our web site has an on-line repair service, which allows registered customers from all over the world, to send us written details and photographs of their leather goods and other items for repair, in order for Paul Jeffrey to give them a quotation. Once the quotation has been agreed, the handbag or whatever it is which requires repair, can be posted to us or brought into the shop and we will carry out the repair, take the fee and return the handbag to the customer.
To get a quote for a repair, please email repair@saddler.co.uk with details of the requirement along with an attached photograph if possible.
